Ever since I began working again (about two weeks ago) I’ve been listening nonstop to British comedians. My two favorites [well they are probably almost everybodys favorites] are Russell Brand and Ricky Gervais. I downloaded the first season of The Ricky Gervais Show and have been reading and watching anything with Russell Brand. They are both incredibly smart and make everything funny. However, a nasty side effect of this overdose on outstanding comedy is that it seems to have jumbled my brain. I think all of the violent laughter and shaking of my head have dislodged some crucial brain-circuitry. Admittedly there was not a whole lot to mess with before, but now, trying to utter a single coherent sentence at work is impossible. I may have actually uttered the following sentence “It’s okay, you saved John* a lot of headaches from me.” Imagine an awkward chuckle and me shamefully walking away. That could be the most nonsensical sentence I’ve ever spoken. A proud day for me. I can only imagine how confidence inspiring that was for my boss. Clearly, I have everything under control.
that is splendid. our american brains might all do well with a little of that kind of jumbling. be careful if you add eddie izzard into that mix. you might just sprain something, either in the ‘bust a gut’ sense or in the brain-spraining sense. their keen, effortless humor (i’m verging on serious tedium, i realize) all wrapped in like, you know, SMARTNESS, it’s downright foreign.
oh yeah, they are foreign. sort of. anyway, GOOD for you. keep talking funny. and now i have to investigate this site of yours. i only got here via russell brand being on my google alerts in case he decides to do a show in seattle. my sisters saw him at the roxy and are still recovering.
Oh yeah, I saw videos of him on Letterman and Leno promoting Forgetting Sarah Marshall and he mentioned he was going to be at the Roxy for a few performances- VERY jealous. However if you are in desperate need of a Russell fix (as I often am) I’d recommend downloading his stand up “Doing Life-Live” on BitTorrent and checking out “Shame” on YouTube, most of the show has been posted.
I’m hoping that eventually if I practice thinking fast and long enough my ability to tell jokes will improve beyond “that’s what she said”- I blame the American Office for that nasty habit.
